Poseidon DetailsBack to Gallery
The romance and beautiful jewel tones of southern waters are reflected in this adaptation of the quilt patch, Poseidon’s Star. Poseidon, god of the sea, is the focal point of an asymmetrical design. Rays of neighboring stars gleam on small golden sailboats which dot the “waters” of this canvasquilt. This 10-1/4” square piece stitched on lovely pewter grey #18 mono canvas can be used in a tray. Embroidery techniques include exploring traditional canvaswork stitches in an untraditional way to create shading, laid work, stitches such as Jacquard, adaptation of Norwich half square, half cross skip, Milanese, Herringbone Gone Wrong, Oriental stitch, a combination cross variation, diagonal Scotch separated by reverse Mosaic, and a wide border from Pageants of Pattern which appears to be quilted in a repetition of the star design. A dimensional effect is created in the outer squares which ripple and fade to “nothing”. The play of light on long woven stitches creates different values of color.
