Baskets and Shadows DetailsBack to Gallery
Four colorful calico baskets hold samplings of the harvest of beautiful shiny red apples. One is stitched in basketweave highlighted with Needle Necessities floss overdye, one in a diagonal Scotch stitch variation, one in Hobnail and one in Diagonal Cashmere. Shiny green leaves of floss overdye create contrast. A “woven” basket handle adds dimension. Between the baskets is a charming row of Ecru trapunto hearts. The burst of light surrounding the baskets gradually shades into shadows in the corners. Shading from Ecru to medium, then dark red is achieved by the use of the Corduroy stitch, Woven stitch, Fran Zenker’s Challenge Stitch, patterned basketweave, brick patio stitch, diagonal Mosaic variation and Scotch variation. Duplicating multiple calico patterns, a border of a deep rich royal blue sets off the central design. This design is repeated in triangular areas of the basket alternating with the patterned basketweave. In the very center of this square is a burst of color stitched in four-way Bargello. This design is an adaptation of a quilted wallhanging from a commercial quilt patch named Apple Baskets and Shadows designed by Ina Sutton.
